Previously, a lambda expression appearing in a function template signature
(or an enable_if attribute) that referenced an enclosing template parameter
failed template argument substitution. For example, with --c++20:

  template<typename T>
  void f(char (*)[sizeof([] { return T{}; }())]) {}
  void g() {
    char a[sizeof(int)];
    f<int>(&a); // Previously a spurious error, now okay.
  }

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed spurious template-argument substitution errors when lambdas in function-template signatures or enable_if expressions refer to enclosing template parameters.
    • Improved template-argument and constraint handling during rescanning, including for generic lambdas, parameter packs, and dependent expressions.
    • Corrected diagnostics for affected template and lambda cases, including overload ambiguity and invalid substitutions.
  • Tests
    • Added regression coverage for lambda rescanning, concepts, constraints, and template arguments.

Walkthrough

Template rescanning now binds and restores template arguments through shared operations. Lambda rescanning checks body dependence and updates closure-class state. Constraint and substitution paths expose deduced arguments in matching scopes. New regression tests and updated expected outputs cover lambda substitution and diagnostics.

Changes: Template rescanning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rescan parameter binding and scope state
src/scope_stk.h, src/scope_stk.c, src/expr.c, src/exprutil.c, src/templates.c, src/overload.c
Shared operations temporarily bind template parameters and deduced arguments, then restore symbol, scope, pack, and variadic state. Constraint checks and template substitution use deduced arguments in matching scopes. Enable-if substitution runs in a rescan scope, and auto-type deduction checks dependency during rescans.
Lambda rescanning and closure state
src/il.c, src/expr.c
Lambda rescanning checks body dependence and sets closure-class and routine state accordingly. Expression rescanning resolves members on rescanned closure classes and retains dependent substituted expressions.
Lambda substitution regression coverage
src/pending_changes/gh-338-lambda-template-param.txt, tests/tests/regressions/*gh-338*, tests/tests/imported/clang/cpp/*, tests/tests/imported/gnu/cpp/cpp2a/*
New tests cover lambda substitution, parameter lookup, and rescanning. Expected diagnostics change in imported tests, and the GH #338 pending-change note records the reported example.

  • edgcpp/compiler#339: This PR also addresses GH #338 through template-parameter binding during lambda rescans.

Suggested labels: bug

Suggested reviewers: wchilders-nvidia, darkarc

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review ef5d5

Template rescanning can restore the wrong parameter state or treat a dependent lambda as independent, potentially rejecting valid C++20 code. Resolve those paths before merging; also investigate the repeated diagnostic before accepting its new baseline.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to ef5d5

The inspected paths preserve prior bindings and perform cleanup before reporting ordinary substitution failures. No introduced security weakness was established, but incomplete security and recovery-path coverage prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated input-to-state path is supplied C++ source reaching lambda rescanning and template substitution within compilation. The inspected effects concern compiler scope, symbols, closure identity, and diagnostics; the evidence does not establish hosting privileges, cross-tenant exposure, or a broader service-level attack scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The binding state records the matching parameter list and instantiation depth, prior deduced arguments, and ownership of pushed declaration and pack-suppression state. Cleanup restores prior values and pops only state owned by that binding operation; pack-suppression cleanup checks stack-top identity.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Ordinary substitution failure is flag-based and does not bypass the inspected begin/end cleanup. Lambda rescanning removes reactivated local scopes, ends parameter binding, and restores lexical and expression state before returning an error result. Preliminary failures occur before binding begins.

Use the saved member position for the lookup.

locator->source_position is uninitialized here. clear_locator copies it into loc, so this introduces undefined behavior during closure rescans. Use qualified_member_position, which was initialized from the saved operand. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Inspect declarations when checking lambda-body dependence.

If a lambda body contains only a dependent declaration, such as using U = typename T::type;, traverse_statement skips its stmk_decl entities. This helper can then return FALSE, and the caller clears the closure's nonreal flag even though the body still depends on T. Check declaration entities and their types before marking the closure real. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Store deduced arguments on the instantiation scope.

When SFINAE access checking is enabled, push_instantiation_scope_for_rescan pushes sck_function_access above the instantiation scope. This assignment then stores args on the wrong scope. Nested pack rescans read deduced_template_args from depth_innermost_instantiation_scope, so they can lose the concrete arguments and reject a valid specialization.

Proposed correction
-    scope_stack_top().deduced_template_args = args;
+    scope_stack[depth_innermost_instantiation_scope].
+                                               deduced_template_args = args;

Is a forward static declaration actually needed? Could we move the definition (and the functions it depends on) up here?

Traverse variable initializers in stmk_decl.

examine_statement_for_instantiation_dependence checks a variable's entity and type, but traverse_statement does not traverse stmk_decl initializers. The existing initializer helper also skips variables until prototype-instantiation state is set. A dependent initializer such as int x = sizeof(T); can therefore be missed.

Update examine_statement_for_instantiation_dependence to traverse variable
initializers for iek_variable entities after examining their type, provided
traversal has not already terminated. Use traverse_variable_init so dependent
expressions in stmk_decl initializers are detected.

Restore default template parameters for the NULL/NULL state.

end_rescan_param_binding can restore a matching instantiation scope with both template_arg_list and deduced_template_args set to NULL. The final else branch then calls update_template_param_symbols(template_param_list, NULL), which marks every parameter not visible. Restore the default parameter values for this state.

In the template-parameter restoration flow, handle the state where both
template_arg_list and deduced_template_args are NULL before the final else
branch; restore each parameter’s default using the existing
restore_default_template_param helper instead of calling
update_template_param_symbols with NULL.

Resolve the duplicate MeowMeow diagnostics before updating this baseline.

The head baseline records four identical line-43 errors with the same instantiation context. The base records one. The lambda token rescan is already marked suppress_diagnostics, so identify the actual emitting path before adding duplicate suppression. If the copies are not required by distinct substitution failures, deduplicate them and regenerate the baseline.

Trace the repeated line-43 diagnostics for the MeowMeow alias template and
identify the emitting path; the lambda token rescan is already marked
suppress_diagnostics, so do not add suppression there. Deduplicate diagnostics
only when the copies arise from the same substitution failure, then regenerate
the baseline to record the resulting diagnostic count.

Restore concept parameter symbols when --no_c++11_sfinae is set.

With --no_c++11_sfinae, the rescan scope gets a fresh template declaration info whose parameters field is NULL. The scope-pop path restores parameter symbols only from that field. The concept parameters bound in is_concept_satisfied and check_type_constraint are therefore not reset when the scope is popped. Both functions used to reset them explicitly, and that reset was removed. The arguments stay bound to the concept's parameter symbols after the check.

Restore the concept parameter symbols in this configuration. Do not restore the resting values unconditionally. A restore to resting values can undo the nested lambda restore that this change relies on.

Review comment at @src/exprutil.c at line 26880:
In is_concept_satisfied and check_type_constraint, restore the concept parameter
symbols when --no_c++11_sfinae is enabled, since the rescan scope’s template
declaration info has no parameters to restore on scope pop. Make the restoration
conditional on that configuration and preserve nested lambda restoration; do not
unconditionally restore resting values.

Handle initk_function_local before the standalone lookup.

In non-standalone builds, get_variable_initializer derives the variable's parent scope when the caller passes NULL, so a missing active function scope is safe. In standalone builds, that derivation is excluded. A declaration containing an initk_function_local variable can then reach find_local_static_variable_init with NULL, which triggers its assertion.

Pass a valid variable scope in the standalone path, or skip initk_function_local when no scope is available.

Guard the function-definition number before resolving the lambda scope.

scope_for_routine_or_null asserts that lambda_routine->function_def_number is valid, but the call checks only that lambda_routine is non-NULL. Prototype-instantiation cleanup can retain the routine after clearing its body. Check the function-definition number before calling the helper.

Keep the closure nonreal when its signature or captures remain dependent.

lambda_body_is_instantiation_dependent traverses only the call-operator body. A body such as return 1 can therefore produce FALSE while a substituted parameter type or capture field still depends on U. The else branch then clears is_nonreal_class. Check the substituted call-operator type and closure capture fields before marking the closure real.

Update the closure-realness check around lambda_body_is_instantiation_dependent
so it also examines the substituted call-operator signature and closure capture
fields for remaining instantiation dependence. Keep is_nonreal_class set when
any of these remain dependent; clear it only when the body, signature, and
captures are all independent.

Reset every parameter before applying a partial argument list.

template_arg_can_update_param_symbol treats missing or unusable entries as unavailable. In partial mode, update_template_param_symbols skips those entries. The current code resets only parameters marked template_param_not_visible. After an earlier full binding makes a parameter visible, a later partial list can therefore leave that parameter bound to the earlier value instead of its resting dependent value.

Apply the same reset in begin_rescan_param_binding before its partial update.

In begin_rescan_param_binding, reset every template parameter to its default

Keep enable_variadic independent of push_decl_scope.

The function comment defines push_decl_scope and enable_variadic as separate controls. The implementation applies the variadic update only when push_decl_scope is TRUE. The documented input combination enable_variadic=TRUE and push_decl_scope=FALSE therefore leaves the scopes with the wrong variadic state, which can affect pack handling during a rescan.

The current callers do not use that combination: src/il.c passes push_decl_scope=TRUE, and src/expr.c passes both flags as FALSE. Move the variadic block outside the push_decl_scope check, or update the documentation to state that enable_variadic requires push_decl_scope.

Separate variadic-state handling from the push_decl_scope guard so

Preserve the enclosing pack-expansion stack during lambda rescans.

rescan_pack_expansion rescans each pack element while begin_rescan_pack_expansion_context is active. enk_lambda is not rescannable, so it reaches copy_template_param_lambda_expr, which calls begin_rescan_param_binding with push_decl_scope=TRUE. The reactivated declaration scope clears pack_expansion_stack, so pack lookups during the lambda rescan can lose the enclosing expansion.

Restore the saved stack after pushing the declaration scope:

In begin_rescan_param_binding, restore the enclosing pack-expansion stack
immediately after push_template_declaration_scope_full by assigning the new
scope’s saved pack_expansion_stack to pack_expansion_stack, preserving it during
lambda rescans.
